Posted in Camping Recipes  by admin on December 23rd, 2008

We are planning to cook our catch on or near the lake

best thing is to keep it siimple to get the best out of the fresh taste. wrap it in tin foil and put it on a hot rock at the side of the fire for 30 mins. or fry it in a bit of butter and lemon. or grill it, stuff it with fresh herbs – parsley, lemongrass, garlic

The classic shore lunch trout is quite simple. Clean the trout. Roll it in cornmeal seasoned with a little salt and pepper. Pan fry in a cast iron pan over hot coals.

But just because you’re on-location doesn’t mean you can’t get as fancy as you want. It’s a matter of how much time you want to spend cooking, and what you bring with you in terms of other ingredients.

No, No, no dude,…you’ are camping ! Lets make this fun ! Get a stick and thread the trout though the gils and out the rear. of course you gutted him ! Or use a three pronged stick and lay fish on forked part and weave another stick in to hold it in place …..it’s fun !! try steak that way too…

I agree with the first post.

Fresh Trout will taste quite a bit better than anything you could get at the store.
The K.I.S.S. principle (in regards to camp cooking) always ends up being your best bet. (K.I.S.S.- Keep it Simple Stupid)

Fillets wrapped in a foil pouch with a splash of olive oil, sliced onions, garlic, couple slices of butter, slice of lemon and a splash of your favorite White wine is an easy way to get gourmet results.

I also agree with Brook- Pan fried Trout is extraordinary! Corn-meal breaded or a boxed breading mix (just add water) is a favorite. I like to crush some pecans and add it to my breading mixture. Adding any crushed nuts to your batter gives your Trout that "almondine" flavor that is so infamous!

The key to good camp cooking is bringing easily cooked ingredients.

I love cooking (Heck, I went to culinary school!) but spending hours fussin' with hard to cook items when you COULD be fishing or hanging out with family or friends is silly.

Here's some basic food ingredients to bring:

    1. Baked Potatoes- EASY to prepare and cook!
    2. Bushes Baked Beans- Easy, EASY, to cook!(Add Bacon bits and a teaspoon of maple syrup for a kick!)
    3. Corn on the Cob
    4. Green bean casserole (Whats easier than opening a can of mushroom soup, 3 cans of green beans, and putting some fried onions on top?)

    The point?

Anything you make will taste awesome if you concentrate more on guests/friends/family and keep the menu rustic and simple.

Hope this helps ya? (Thumbs Brook & Post #1)

Another vote here for keeping it simple-foil, with garlic and a little olive oil, crushed sea salt and ground black pepper and you will end up with a great tasting fish fillet, personally i think that something cooked on a campfire always tastes the best as opposed to pan seared etc, just wrap it tightly in foil and leave in the embers of the fire to cook.
