what are the best camping supplies for camping in alaska?
Posted in Camping Supplies by admin on December 17th, 2008
The key word in your question is also the key word in the answer…..”BEST”. What ever works best in any of the mountainous states in the lower 48 states will work best in Alaska as well. Buy name brand products with good reputations and good warranties and head for the woods. Alaska is a unique state, but it does not require unique equipment that can’t be found anywhere but here. There are four seasons here just as there are in most other parts of the North American continent and equipment selected for the appropriate seasons will be just as applicable here as it will in any other typical climate in the continental states.

It would be the same as anywhere else, but you need more protective clothing, water, good shelter, and a GUN

For starters look at some good quality tents with large vestibules and room for at least 4 adults inside, if you have more then 2 people add 2 more adults to any tent size you would consider. you will need the space inside in order to escape from the weather comfortably. I have used several different tents over the years and love my REI Geo dome the best. It comes in 2,4,6,and 8 person sizes.
Next is heating cooking sources weight is the key here if car camping bring a heater and a stove. if packing in, I prefer the colman backpacker two burner. Never use them in your tent but in the vestibule area where they reflect heat into the tent.
sleeping needs a lofty sleeping bag and thick pad or mattress. Again colman here.
there are many choices for the different specific needs and I argree with another answer, you have to have protection from the Grizz. Pepper sprays at the minimum, a firearm is my prefered 44 magnum in a pistol, 45/70 in a rifle.
All of these and other items can be found online

The answer to your question depends on where in Alaska. You see we have extreme different environments. SE Alaska is a costal rain forest, in Ketchikan they get over 6 feet of rain a year, so for SE AK you need a truly water proof tent, and mud boots (Alaska sneekers).
Up north in the interior its hot in the summer and sub zero in the winter. So camping there in the summer requires a tent with lots of ventilation.
Bugs can be very bad in Alaska, clouds of biting no-seeums, mosquitoes and such can drive a person insane, no joke! So very fine mesh screens on your tent are a must. Also most mosquito nets will not do to keep out the tiny no-seeums, so look again for very fine mesh head nets and bring lots of bug repellant with 100% DEET.
As for the rest of your gear, it’s the same you would use anywhere camping.
Pack a big bore rifle like the 45/70 or a 12ga with slugs for bears. To keep bears out of camp get a portable electric bear fence.
