I live in Huntington beach and i am willing to drive up to 2 hours in any direction.
No need to go very far. You can camp right at Doheny State Beach, where they allow Campfires. Further down the coast, you have San Elijo, South Carlsad, and San Clemente State Beaches.
To the north, you have Leo Carillo, McGrath, Carpinteria, El Capitan, and Refugio State Beaches.
All allow campfires along with camping. You can reserve them at www.reserveamerica.com.

If you like the desert atmosphere, Joshua Tree has some great campgrounds. There are great walking trails out there and it is quite beautiful, especially at this time of year. It might be a little further than you plan to go, however. Something like 130 miles from Huntington.
