Where is a good place to go camping in Southern California, over Christmas?
Posted in ca camping by admin on December 18th, 2008
I have a pop-up tent trailer. I am in Los Angeles, & looking for a good place to go within about 100 miles. Primitive is fine. Not worried about the cold. Probably heading for Joshua Tree, but wondering if anyone has any other good ideas. Thanks!

Doheny State Beach, a chapter of my cooking club gathers there every January for a weekend of good food, friends, and fun.

The Anza Borrego dessert in San Diego County is a great place to go in the winter because the weather ends up being in the 70's, perfect camping temps. You should try to avoid the mountain areas like Big Bear or Idyllwild because many campgrounds are closed during the winter season. Anza is the best. There are even places where you can just pull off the side of the primitive road and set up camp and not have to pay any fees. The dessert is great in the winter.

Joshua tree is pretty mellow this time of year. If you havn't been there yet it is definatly worth a visit.

From this link you can also get info on Idyllwild, San Bernadino National Forest and Lake Hemet. I have spent some in the black mountains climbing and bouldering as well as Hemet. The elevation makes it a nice break from the desert.
