Where is the best camping in Florida? Im from Colorado so anything remote is a plus?

Posted in florida camping  by admin on December 20th, 2008

Florida is a big state and what kind of camping are you going to do and what time of the year? I like northern central Florida. No matter where you go…Humid, many bugs, and flat. Osceola N.F. Bring a good bug repellant supply. Some of the many fine State Parks have Primative Areas to hike to, like Oleano SP north of Gainesville. The problem is the nights are hot. Bring baby wipes/ talcum powder or you will have to try to sleep "sticky". Leave that mountain sleeping bag at home! Use a tent with plenty of ventialtion and tight mesh windows. Gator encounters are very rare, not to worry. and snakes are usually not a problem just keep alert where you walk. Natives only camp in the winter months October to April. The Florida Trail Association can tell you more. Have fun!

Where can you take your own boat to a beach and go camping in north east florida or south east georgia?

Posted in florida camping  by admin on December 18th, 2008

We have an off shore 24ft. boat and would like to go camping one weekend and wondered where there was a place you can camp out on the beach in the south east georgia or north east florida area with a floating dock for the boat.

You can camp at Little Tybee Island. It is just across the "back" river from Tybee Island. It is uninhabited by humans, and you are allowed to camp there. Just be aware that it is totally primitive. It is however a beautiful island. We have kayaked over there before and are planning to camp there ourselves soon. It's close to Tybee Island so if you forget anything or want to go get a pizza or something you can just go over to Tybee.

Florida Camping Advise?

Posted in florida camping  by admin on December 17th, 2008

… I want to go camping when I go on vacation in July … I live in central Florida, and I found a place called Alexander Springs on the internet … I've never heard of it, and I don't know anyone who's been there … I saw these 2 pages :

http://www.lakecountyfl.gov/hometown_highlights/alexander_springs.aspx

http://tfn.net/springs/Alexander.htm

… and it really looks like fun … has anyone been there? … please advise me on this place …

You picked a wonderful area to camp. If you don't like Alexander Springs, Salt Springs, on Highway 19 is a very good campground.

You could travel over to Juniper Springs that has a better canoe runthan all the campgrounds uo there. This is towards Ocala, on Highway 40. While up there, travel to Forest Corners for some of the best Bar B Cue you have ever had at Rogers BBQ.

Traveling farther West on 40, turn left at highway 35, Silver Springs, for one of the best state parks in Florida, Silver River State Park. They put a lot of money into canoes, I'm not sure they still have them.

You'll have fun in the forest no matter where you go.

Good luck

Is there any free/primitive camping in southern Florida, the keys, or the east coast of Florida?

Posted in florida camping  by admin on December 15th, 2008

I’m taking a 2 week road trip to Florida, all the way down to The Keys, this winter with some friends and we’re really trying to avoid having to pay for motels.

I suggest the Sebastian Inlet State Park. It’s on A1A (Beach Line). It has a heavily wooded area with camp grounds with clean bathrooms and electricity and private fire pits and lots. The views that you camp on overlook the Indian River and you can fish right off your property if you’d like. If you walk to the right the river goes into the Atlantic Ocean. It’s only 15 bucks to camp out (a group) and you can really make a day out of it because you can spend all day fishing or at the beach and then walk right to your camp spot. We love going there
I hope you’ll check out this link but i sent you some others to help you travel:

Does anyone know of tent camping places near NW Florida?

Posted in florida camping  by admin on December 13th, 2008

I would like to go camping this spring, but instead of a lodge or cabin, use a tent. I live near Pensacola, FL and don't really want to travel more than 300 miles. Thanks!

Many of Florida's state parks in the panhandle are geared more towards tent camping than big RV's. I expecially liked Blackwater River State Park when I was up there. There's a fantastic canoe livery just outside the park. The trip down the Blackwater River is also fantastic.

Reservations are made through Reserve America, a branch of Ticketmaster. So many sites are held back for drive up accomadations, about 10%, all others must be made through Reserve America.

http://www.reserveamerica.com/

At the above site you can look at various Florida state parks, even scout the campgrounds for a site you might like.

Another state park I like, near you, is the Suwannee River State Park, near Live Oak. You mat drive over to the Spirit of the Suwannee RV Park to catch a canoe ride down the Suwannee River.

Florida Caverns and Falling Waters State Parks are also nice for tent camping. As you look through the park system on Reserve America's web site, I feel you'll agree that there are many state parks with-in your 300 mile range.

Good luck & happy camping

is camping in florida safe?

Posted in florida camping  by admin on December 11th, 2008

I'm planning a trip to florida with my kids and was thinking about tent camping. Is it too risky will my kids survive?(we go camping in ontario all the time)

I've been tent camping in Florida several times. It makes a big, big difference when you go & where.

Summer in ontario (as I recall) has some pretty large mosquitos from time to time. Summer camping in Florida always has lots of not-as-large-but-seemingly-hungrier-and-more-numerous mosquitos. So summer is out.

By November, even South Florida has enough cold to keep the mosquitos down.

So, as for WHEN, stick to Nov-April.

As for the where, the 'stay away from water' advice is both serious and silly. Last time I camped in Florida, we were on an island, about 30 yards from the gulf of mexico and had no gator problems. Gators will mostly stay away from you if you stay away from them & I tend to see them mostly in lakes/ponds. Obviously, don't pitch your tent right next to a muddy, shady spot on a pond that has eyes poking out of it. That last time we camped, we did see alligators in a pond about 50 yards down the path, but we had no problems with them.

As for the nice, easy to get to beach spots in South Florida & on the gulf coast, they usually book up well in advance (Fla Keys requires a year's advance booking). On the other hand, it's easier to find spots in north-central florida (Gainesville and north) where you will have better shade, feel cooler in the day, and probably a better time all around as I can't say I ever feel really rested after a beach camping trip as you can never get the sand off. I'd say find a nice spot on a river near Gainesville and camp.

Yes, the kids will survive.
