Cabin camping in San Diego?

Posted in San Diego Camping  by admin on December 20th, 2008

What is the best place? I prefer the mountains, as I would like to have snow. I’m looking for something romantic also as this is for Valentines Day. I’ve found a couple and under $60 which is what I’m looking for, I’m just looking for personal experiences etc.

For more of a chance of snow you might triy Big Bear or Arrowbear in Riverside/San Bernardino County area. Or perhaps Idyllwild.

In San Diego county, little chance of snow but for about $45 a night you can go to the cabins in William Heise County Park near Julian. You’ll have no running water though, have to use campground facilities for that. But you’ll have heat and electricity and it is in San Diego County. You’ll have to bring your own mattress pad and bedding. You must reserve in advance because only about 6 cabins total.

The park is really beautiful with several nice hiking trails and the town of Julian is nearby.

What are some good places to camp on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego?

Posted in San Diego Camping  by admin on December 18th, 2008

I'm going to be traveling by car from San Francisco to San Diego over the course of a week and a half, camping in a tent along the way. Since I have a week to make this trip, it doesn't matter if I take a roundabout route (for example, going inland all the way to the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't bother me).

What are some good places for me to camp on the trip? I prefer to be as secluded as possible, to get away from it all. Also, the cheaper the better!

Thanks!

As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week.

If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE–in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area.

If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego.

My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible.

Have fun!!!!

whats a good camping spot in between San diego and San Francisco?

Posted in San Diego Camping  by admin on December 15th, 2008

A fun and unique place to camp is Oceano Dunes. You actually drive your vehicle onto the beach. You can rent ATVs (or bring your own) and drive the sand dunes. Or you can pay to be a passenger of a hummer going over the dunes. Either way….it’s fun.

My family has done this many times. We usually camp at a nearby Pismo State Beach and then spend a day on dunes.

Whats the difference between Boot Camp in Parris Island and Boot Camp in San Diego?

Posted in San Diego Camping  by admin on December 13th, 2008

Is there a rivalry between east coasters and west coasters? Is the training any different or is it just another thing to compeat over? Ive heard Marines are very competitive.

I went to PI and we were always joked about the "Hollywood Marines". All in good fun. Semper Fi and Happy Birthday to all Marines !

How fast can my boyfriend recieve mail from Oxnard to Camp Pendleton in San Diego?

Posted in San Diego Camping  by admin on December 11th, 2008

I’m planning on sending my boyfriend/father of our baby mail everyday(depending how many stamps I can get) when I hear from him, it’s been almost a week since he left for bootcamp.

Does anyone know how fast mail travels from Oxnard to San Diego? How long does it take? I don’t want him to get lonely(even though ya, he’ll get mail from his family and friends), and I wanna keep him updated on our baby.

Camp P isn’t where they do Marine Basic, it is about 45 minutes north of San Diego in Oceanside. That is a base where they can do schooling and be stationed.

If he is at MCRD San Diego (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) where they do Basic then that is right in San Diego by the airport. It will probably take 2 to 3 days for mail to be received there, but when he gets it will be the question, as mail is not always handed out each day to the Recruits.

Beach camping in San Diego??

Posted in San Diego Camping  by admin on December 7th, 2008

Im in charge of planning my club camping trip for this year, and we decided to go camping on the beach. Are there any good campsites on or really close to the beach that might still have open spots? It has to take tent camps too.

Check out San Elijo. It's more north, but it's pretty awesome for camping. I went in January actually and it was beautiful. :)

Have fun!
