Breast Cancer Walk

Posted in Sleeping Bags  by admin on December 9th, 2008

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Numerous cancer researches have been done to understand the disease better. In women, breast cancer is the second most common cancer next to lung cancer. There are millions of affected women in the world and 200,000 more will be diagnosed with the disease in 2007. Current statistics show that breast cancer claims the life of 1 woman every 13 minutes. It would be really beneficial if there is higher awareness on breast cancer. Knowing about the disease, its causes, symptoms, treatment and management, will greatly help patients and families of these patients understand the disease better.

One of the most effective breast cancer awareness programs is the breast cancer walk. In the United States, there is the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefit. A fund raising program participated by men and women who want to make a difference in the lives of these breast cancer victims. The program involves 3 days or 60 miles of walking and participated by millions of people from all over the nation. It is a chance for the participants to learn about cancer and at the same time help in promoting awareness.

Although it may seem a lot of work, the breast cancer walk is actually fun. Since a breast cancer walk is not a race, participants can actually walk leisurely. It’s the perfect chance to meet people from all walks of life and share experiences. The route is filled with safety and support nets with people standing by to offer food and drinks. There are medical volunteers on stand by for emergency medical attention. At the end of each day, participants get to rest, shower, and eat a scrumptious dinner. Comfortable sleeping bags and tents are supplied for a good night’s rest. All these friendly accomondations can make the Breast Cancer Walk a truely unique experience.

If you want to participate but feel like you are not ready for such physical activity, you should not worry. There are training manuals provided that will put you in perfect shape to walk in no time at all. Training walks will even be organized in your area to practice long-distance walking. Since the Breast Cancer 3-day Series are held in different cities like Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Michigan and Philadelphia, you can practice at the city nearest you.

It’s a good idea to join in on the Breast Cancer Walk. Not only is it great exercise, but it’s also fun and it’s for a great cause.

Since a breast cancer walk is mostly a fund raising program to support breast cancer research, education, treatment and screening, you will be asked to raise a certain amount for the cause. You would be surprised to know that most participants exceed this amount because of the amazing generosity of friends, co-workers and families. Even people you do not know will eagerly support you in your cause.

Proceeds of the breast cancer walk will be distributed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure movement, which has already generated $1 billion to date for fighting breast cancer, and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, a public charity that is considered to one of the largest independent charitable institutions in the United States.

Question about grobags and similar baby sleeping bags?

Posted in Sleeping Bags  by admin on December 9th, 2008

When using a grobag, do you still need to do the recommended 'feet to foot' posiiton in the cot?
I bought one and there'll be a lot of excess sleeping bag at the bottom as it's quite a bit longer than a newborn. If I put the baby's feet at the foot of the bed, where will all the excess sleping bag go? Won't it all be bunched up at the end?

Hi, I don't think the feet to foot thing is as vital with grobags as the baby doesn't have the issue of wriggling under the covers. I put the end of the grobag at the foot of the cot and put my little girl in it – so her feet are probably about 4 inches from the foot of the bed. I think the grobags are excellent as my 6 month old has recently started to 'thrash around' in her sleep. If she was under a cover it would be off her, or over her head or restrict her movement. I don't think they are recommended for newborns though? (make sure he/she can't wriggle down in to the neck of the grobag). I started using one when she was about 2-3 months old and transferred from the moses basket to the cot. In the moses basket she was tucked in with a sheet/blanket. They also come in different tog ratings – we've got a 2.5 tog one for most nights and a 1 tog one for hot summer nights. Hope this helps, but check out what your health visitor thinks is best.

How do 0 degree sleeping bags work?

Posted in Sleeping Bags  by admin on December 7th, 2008

Im looking at buying a 0 degree sleeping bag and I would like to know how they work. In general, how does a sleeping bag that keeps you warm in 0 degree weather let you breath and be cool in 100 degree weather? Please explain to the best of your knowledge. Thanks

They can’t do both. Sleeping bags are rated for a range of temp. Very low temp bags just trap your body heat with high tech insulation and seal without exposed zippers to let the heat out. They also wrap tight around your face, basically a good mummy bag. They will be very much uncomfortable at warmer temp.

Bags for warm temps have less/lower tech insulation, exposed zippers, open tops to get in and out easier etc.

What Is A Down Comforter?

Posted in Sleeping Bags  by admin on December 6th, 2008

Down comforter is a down comforter that very much similar to the thick and feathery quilt but has additional down feathers extracted form geese or duck. The weight of down comforter is generally light and the texture is soft, warm as well as look very luxurious, and this is the most reason why down comforter is so popular.

The conditions that make down comforter softer than normal type is Most feathers lay flat with a central quill, but true down lacks a hard shaft and the fluffy filaments are “bushy” in appearance, and it also has special characteristic called “wicking”, which ability to keep warmth while let moisture to escape and this is a desirable for users.

Generally, a down comforter will be labeled for its fill power as this is a main indicator to measure whether it’s good down comforter. When they are washed and Once washed and sterilized, an ounce of down is measured to obtain the space it occupies in cubic inches. Excellent quality down comforter normally has fill rating ranging from 800 cubic inch or upper, meanwhile the lower quality ones has fill rating ranging from 300 or below. However, you can choose down comforters that has fill rate from 500 or upper as an average good quality. The higher the rating, the fluffier the comforter, and the more warmth it will provide.

There is another indicator of down comforter called “fill weight”, which describe the actual bulk weight used in the comforter rather than a description of the quality of the down.

There are also special type of down comforter called either baffle boxing or sewn-through stitching, especially the second one is not as expensive and generate quilt-like appearance of “pockets” that hold the down in place. However, due to the stitching lies down from top side to the bottom side so, these comforters do not insulate as well and will not be as fluffy.

A baffle refer to the stuff materials inside the comforter, which lies horizontally from top to bottom. This will form the square boxes that hold the down into large inner compartments while allowing it to remain fluffy. However it still also has disadvantage if there are some baffle boxes which may be not fully sealed and it will down quite often over times, so users may want to look for true baffle box, or also called end-to-end baffle.

Most down comforter usually easy and save for wash. However, most of comforters still suggest that they must be cleaned properly by professionals. In case if you want to clean it by yourself, make sure that you have read and follow instructions which come with the product carefully when you wash it Aside from the down comforter, down blankets, pillows, jackets, slippers, gloves and sleeping bags are all readily available.

Research study shows that the electric blanket even though they are able to maintain warmth but may be not like that throughout the night The electromagnetic field created may cause problems. A down comforter is a healthy alternative that requires no power and feels like a slice of heaven.

What is a good a tog rating on sleeping bags?

Posted in Sleeping Bags  by admin on December 5th, 2008

Hiya,
I am going camping on Friday in the Lake District with some friends, and it's something I have never really done before. Going to buy a sleeping bag, but just wondering whether anyone knew what a good tog rating would be. (Note – I am always moaning that i am too cold!!!)

Thanks, xx

If you go to somewhere like Millets they have a good selection on sleeping bags, from caterpillar types and ones that you can zip together to make a double bag, plus liners which are great to wick away moisture-which the way the weather is at the moment mite be a good thing! Can't remeber what I got my lads but they've not complained at being cold and their bags cost about £20. Enjoy the Lake District but watch for the midgies!!
