Where can I take my family camping in San Bernardino area?
Posted in Family Camping by admin on December 20th, 2008
The San Bernardino National Forest is full of great camping opportunities. This time of year you may want to stick to campgrounds below 5,000' as higher sites will be awfully cold at night and subject to snow.

Silverwood Lake is nice, or Big Bear (many campgrounds up there). Also desert camping can be fun, like near Calico Ghost Town there are 2 campgrounds.

Silverwood lake is ok, but it's better for a day trip. The best place ,locally, that i've camped recently is San Antonio lake. That place is beautiful! It's about a 4hr drive, but well worth it!
Lake Perris is ok, but only for a 2night stay…longer than that, and you'll lose interest.
But wherever you camp, you'll have fun as long as you're with some good friends/family!

You don't mention what type of camping you are planning, but here are some sources to investigate to help you decide for yourself…
Northeast of Bakersfield is the Sequoia National Forest. There are developed campgrounds, as well as dispersed camping (camping outside a developed campground) opportunites. http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/recreation/campgrounds.html shows the developed campgrounds.
Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages thousands of acres around Bakersfield. http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/bakersfield/Programs/Recreation_opportunities.1.html is the recreation page for BLM's Bakersfield Field Office. Dispersed camping is permitted on all BLM lands not posted "No Camping".
http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visitors/projects.cfm?Id=L217680 gives information about camping at Success Lake.
http://www.parks.ca.gov/parkindex/region_info.asp?regiontab=0&id=7 is an interactive state park locator map. Some parks offer camping, and some don't.
Hope this helps you get started.
